Get Your Kitchen Organized and Stylish with these Interior Design Tips
Let’s face it, we live in a country where bigger seems to be better. The average square footage of new homes built in America has grown larger with each decade. We have space for days! But for some reason we’ve only become more cluttered and closed in with all the stuff we’ve acquired to fill it with.
How did it come to this?!
At some point you’ll become fed up with all the clutter and you’ll act – by getting rid of it or getting organized. Why not make that day today? Here are a few ways you can get each of the rooms in your home organized while also becoming a bit more stylish in process.
The Function and Feel of your Kitchen
The main purpose of the kitchen is for cooking and the preparation of food. However, in recent times the modern kitchen is also seen as a place to gather and entertain. For this reason, your kitchen should be given a lot of attention when it comes to your organizational efforts. With a better organized space you’ll actually feel like spending time in it and inviting others to join you.
Combine like Utensils.
A place for everything and everything in its place is the old adage. Do you haphazardly combine your cooking and eating utensils into whatever drawer is closest to the dishwasher? Stop your frantic rummaging and separate utensils based on kind and function. Keep them far enough away from one another that you aren’t tempted to just combine them again out of laziness.
Have a bunch of odds and ends floating around drawers and shelves? It might seem like a good idea to have a “junk drawer”, but really it’s just a mess. Purchase small, closable containers and start separating bottle caps, rubber bands, twist ties, paper clips, and more into their own container. Label them and proudly display them in their more attractive condition on an open shelf, or stick them away somewhere within easy reach. Junk drawer no more!
It’s time to round ‘em up and put ‘em in their place. Whether you have a walk-in pantry or overhead cabinets, there’s no reason why the mac-n-cheese should be hanging out with your Pinot Grigio (that would be an interesting combination). Take your dry goods and separate them based on type: pastas, rice, beans should all be together. Canned goods get their own spot. Spices deserve a special place.
Hang those Pots & Pans.
Are you still bending over and rummaging around in those darkened cabinets for that frying pan? Now that you’ve found it, take a look at the end of the handle – notice something? Yes, there’s probably a hole in it. It’s for hanging! Cut out the back pain and cut the noise. Take those pots and pans out of your cabinets forever and hang them instead. You can either purchase an overhead rack specifically for this purpose, or you can go DIY with an attractively painted pegboard placed on one of the kitchen walls.
